Learning In Between

Hillel says: Do not say, "When I will have free time, I will learn Torah," for maybe -- 'lo tipaneh' -- you will never have free time (Pirkei Avot 2:4)."

There's one word for this quotation -- "shtark." To me, it says "Be serious! Wipe that smile of your face, stop wasting time. . . I saw that!" You can imagine how thrilled I was to see a little Chasidic interpretation of this 2000 year old, eternal chunk of wisdom.

Maybe "lo tipaneh." These two words can be seen as singular phrase. This changes the whole text. Maybe, "lo tipaneh." Maybe what Hashem desires from us is that we learn Torah, and not just from books, in the times of "lo tipaneh," the times when we aren't free.

Each of us is so special and has a purpose in this world to fulfill unlike anybody else's. Say someone says: "I'm going to yeshiva in 5 years, thank G-d. So until then I'll just stop learning and growing - who has the time!" And hopefully this person makes it to yeshiva and, gevalt, he becomes so holy, unbelievable. But maybe, just maybe, his purpose in this world was during those five years when he mamash had no time to breathe. His soul was on this planet to learn for those few moments in the elevator, to meditate during that hour stuck in traffic.

This Torah is so deep and has been sinking into every being of my existence since I first stumbled across it. I would love to go on for hours . . . but this vort was brought to you by the Slonimer Rebbe, in one of those "lo tipaneh" moments. I hope you enjoyed it. Good Shabbas, Good Yontif, CHAG SAMEACH --
